Canopy construction?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I hope this is not a repeated question.

I have seen a method of using a modified caulking gun, a wooden form and a heat gun to make a canopy. Has anyone actually tried and had success with this method? If so, what plastic or other material works? If not, what other methods are recommended?

I keep thinking that there has to be a relatively simple way to do this without vacuum forming.

Dawg: I dunno where the caulking gun comes into play. You can use pretty much any PETG plastic bottle that will fit - those 2 liter pop bottles work very well.

Scroll down to "working with plastic" in this link:

Mine is not to reason why; I just wire them up to fry...I mean Fly!

Canopys from pop bottles

You can make canopys from clear pop bottles and your heat gun. Make a wooden canopy plug then cut the bottom off a one liter pop bottle then put the plug in the bottle and use the heat gun to shrink the plastic around the canopy plug. I have made a few canopys this way , try it yourself it is very easy to do. The SPAD web site might have the instructions for this method or check out the Combat site on RCCanada

I can't find the site right now but the caulking gun was modified to pull the plastic tight over a form while heat was applied. The form was attached to the piston and the handle base attached to the sheet of what was called acetate. Looked like a neat trick. Thanks for the input. I wlll have to start buying plastic from now on and give it a try.

I guess I could muster together a few calking guns, but 32" pop bottles might be a trick to find.
