I went to work Sunday AM at 2:30...was -54 with the wind chill....colder than a well digger's arse!
It was -20 thismotning and we were all talking about how nice it was...amazing how a few days below -40 will change your outlook....two weeks ago we would have all been groaning about -20, now it's tropical.
The wind on Sunday started blowing from Sask picked up speed across Manitoba and froze us here in NW ont to the bloody bone!

Yep, it's been a bit frosty here in the 'Peg.

You know it's really cold when you take the dog out for his walk and you have to snap him off the hydrant...

I lived in Northern Ontario, Kirkland Lake area for a few years awhile back. There's only two seasons in the north - This winter and last winter! When the temp hit -20 we would say "Thank God it's warming up!"

Seriously, I remember that for about three weeks between January and February the temp would not get above -40. My first winter there, one night it hit a record low of -58 C. You try and explain that to people here and they say something like, "Yeah but its a dry cold there, here its the humidity that gets you!" Yeah? Well let me just say, when it get to -50 C humidity or not, its bloody well darn cold!

You can tell you live in Northern Ontario when it gets too cold to snowmobile or go ice fishing!

I grew up in North Bay. One winter, I think it was '92 or '93, it was so cold over a 2.5 week span (below -40 everyday) that the water mains and sewer pipes were freezing solid.

Blocks of houses had either no water or sewer services. Because the water and sewer lines are under ground, the city had to purchase a machine to dig down and warm them up to unblock them. If my memory is correct, it wasn't till the end of April that everything in the city was working properly.

The place I worked at, a gas station, was one of those places affected by the frozen sewer. What a scene!

Gary Maker said it best, I was born and raised in Rouyn-Noranda, just accross the Ont. Quebec borders from Gary's...
Let me tell you about cold and SNOW!!!
SNOW so high you had to come out of the second story window to dig a path to the front door. and COLD, we lived on a 3 story farm house about 80 years old. only saw dust in the walls for insulation and we know it only fills about 2 feet of insulation at best after 80 years trapped in the walls.
We had a wood stove to warm up the huge house. Not a airtight.
at about 2 AM the fire would go out.
I remember getting up in the morning and my slippers would be frozen to the floor of my second story bedroom.
If it was windy, there would be frost on the sheets of our beds.

Now that is cold.

Gotta love the North though...
