well the event is over today.

cold and VERY windy.

Saturday was cold and windy but it was straight down the runway.

Some GREAT Plane.

One mid air - between a little FOAMEE (jet) and a very nice MIG-29 (I think) right over the runway stage center.

Well the little foamee disappeared.. and the MIG-29 I think sucked in some foam in the engine and went in hard on the downwind. It was in bad shape.

I missed the shot (damn) but got several pictures with part of foam in the MIG's wing.

My buddies emailed me yesterday to tell me about it. It appeared it was Thomas Singer's 2007 World Jet Master's CARF Mig that was lost. Thomas was one of several pilots that came to the event from Germany. The Mig was powered by two P160plus engines. There are some pics of the crashed Mig on RCU but according to the guys its a write off. I was at the Woodland /Davis jet rally in October when Jason Sommes ( excellent pilot bu the way ) flying a fomie Airliner had a mid air with a KingCat. The fomie was torn apart in flight. The KingCat had some damage to a wing and lost an elevator in flight. The pilot managed to get the KingCat back down bu lost control on final and caused further landing gear damage.

At events where large aircraft eat up lots of airspace having one or two of the little guys buzzing in a closed in space requires extra vigilance on part of the the spotters and GOOD COMMUNICATION. I am sure you will be seeing lots of discussion re this crash in upcoming days.

I saw the collision myself...exciting, but very sad. The Mig-29 sustained a hit to the radome and left wing, but remained in control. Unfortunately, the engines went into failsafe soon after the collison, and Thomas impressively bellied landed the jet downwind beyond the active runway. It is suspected the ECU's that were mounted behind the radome detected an impact causing failsafe initiation. The airframe was severely cracked beyond reasonable repair and garbaged.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday flying...and was very impressed with the Skymaster F4...very seriously considering buying one (with a P180)! I also got my turbine waiver approved by Jorge Escalona and Frank Tiano.
