I have built several kits (and planes from plans) which featured these kinds of surfaces. Never had a problem with them, and they do emulate full-scale practice.

Except for a need to be a little more careful while constructing the parts with two lines of interaction so that there is no interference when the moveable surface is activated, it is no big deal. You should feel confident in following the directions and plans.

Clearly, I have to build according to the plan, and no re-design is necessary.
