Except when we switch to DST then it becomes GMT -4.

Unless of course you live by GMT or UTC then it stays the same.

FWIW most GPS units display the time for the time zone you're in at the time, but time stamp data in GMT or UTC to keep things consistent.

I lived in Regina for 6 1/2 years and I was one that wanted real DST because it got dark at latest about 9:40 (sunset 9:13 on longest day). Since I had been used to Winnipeg where it was 10:30ish I was bugged!
Story I heard was that the cows would get confused if you changed the time. No thought about the dairy farmer adjusting his milking time to stay consistent for the cows.
