Question New to this?!?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I am new to r/c cars and I was wondering what kind I should get...

like I really like the buggies or truggies but i dont know if I should get electric nitro or gasoline.

If you know any pros or cons than you could list too

I will probably be racing and will also be on a track

Is there a big difference between the three of them??

Also if I do buy a nitro how long can a car run on 1 gallon for and useally how big are the tanks on the buggys

Thanks

Re: New to this?!?

Well, you say you're probably going to race, so your choices are immediately going to be narrowed by what classes are run at your local track.

Re: New to this?!?

As Narly said if your planning on participating in organized racing your choices will be limited to the classes your tack allows. A typical 1/8 scale nitro buggy uses a 125cc fuel tank that lasts about 15-20 minutes depending on driving conditions. One gallon of fuel will get you about 30 tanks or 7.5 to 10 hours of run time. I've listed a pro/con list below and I tried to be fair.

Electric Pro
Quiet - Won't disturb neighbors
Easy to run
Clean - no fumes or oily residue
Can be made as fast as or faster than nitro counter part
Usually a racing class available

Electric Con
Quiet - For those who love the sound of a real engine
Batteries - Need a few to keep the fun going
Going fast tends to raise cost fast

Nitro Pro
Noise of a real engine
Most are plenty fast out of the box
Unlimited run time as long as you have the fuel
Usually a racing class available

Nitro Con
Noisy - not everyone like to hear nitro running in their neighborhood
Fuel and oil residue mixed with dirt makes a mess
Tuning can cause trouble for some people
Fuel can get pricey if you run a lot

Gasoline Pro
Its huge and a real attention getter
Noise of a real engine
Uses standard pump gas
Unlimited run time as long as you have fuel

Gasoline Con
Noisy with a tuned pipe these are much worse than nitros
Initial purchase price is higher
Can't take physical abuse of the nitro or electrics
I have yet to come across a track offer large scale racing in Canada

Re: New to this?!?

Since all Electric/Nitro/Gas use batteries I'm not exactly sure which your question refers to so I give a basic break down. Of course all estimates will vary with use. A good place to buy would be www.GreatHobbies.com they offer a very large online inventory, shipping Canada wide and decent support.

Transmitter (Applies to all)
8AA Standard batteries should give you a couple weeks to a month.

2wd Stock Electric Truck/Buggy
4200mAh 7.2v packs will run about 20-25 minutes.

Nitro Buggy/Truggy Receiver Battery
1500mAh 6.0v packs are usually good for a afternoon of running.

Gas Buggy Receiver Battery
4200mAh 6.0v packs are usually good for a full day of running.

Re: New to this?!?

If your purchasing it locally I would visit your local hobby shop and see what they carry since they should be familiar with what they sell and carry replacement parts. In the end the "best" is one that you won't have to wait weeks or months for a replacement part. However with that said I've always found Traxxas and HPI products to be carried by most hobby shops making replacement parts easier to come by and both companies offer many electric and nitro vehicles that very are popular. Regarding battery runtime when comparing 4WD vs. 2WD assuming both are similar setups you can expect about 5 - 7 minutes less runtime when using a 4WD vehicle.

Re: New to this?!?

Is there a big different between the 2 (4wd vs. 2wd)

is on faster, more reliable, etc.

I think that I want an R/C that I can build. I think those are the Kits?

Are they reliable and just as good as RTR or worse?

Also I went to GreatHobbies and there weren't alot of the brands that you suggested

Re: New to this?!?

When comparing a electrical 2WD buggy vs. 4WD buggy with identical motors the top speed will be very similar. I've heard people complain about the durability of the front end on 4WD electric buggies this doesn't apply to the cars though and there is also the extra maintenance on the 4WD vehicles. When comparing handling and acceleration there is a very noticeable difference, with 4WD you can really put the power down but with 2WD you have to take it easy on the throttle otherwise you will spin out. If you’re racing locally they should have separate classes for 2WD & 4WD but it would be good to check out what classes they do offer and go from there if your really set on racing.

Re: New to this?!?

Thanks

Umm... this will be my first Good R/C soo

Do you think I should get a kit (thats were you build it right) a ARR or a
RTR

Also what is the differences between ARR and kits??

Are the kits unreliable and will they break easier or are they just as good as RTR

Also do you know any other R/C sites to buy from in Canada....

Also I was wondering if Tamiya or Associated was any good
