Spam on RC Canada

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Recently, there seems to be more and more spam on our favourite website. I have noticed on some other forums that you have to have a specified number of replies to posts before you can start a new thread. This would prevent someone (or spam-bots) from joining and then immediately posting ads for cell phones, computers, etc. For example, if you had to reply to 10 existing threads before being permitted to start a new topic. I'm sure that it could be done. What does everyone else think of this idea?

I know it's not a huge deal, but it strikes me as being incredibly rude and intrusive when RC Canada gets this sort of crap being posted.

My 2 cents!

Re: Spam on RC Canada

Rules that are imposed on members due to a post from a spammer are not good in my books.

I think that reporting the spam to admin (Jason) is the best thing to do.
After that just ignore the spam.

Jason has always done a good job at blocking them.

Re: Spam on RC Canada

I run a web forum myself and have had to deal with spam issues many times. As an admin, this is expected and part of what we do. Typically, we try to address the spam-bot issue at the account creation stage. I tend to agree that restricting users is counter to what we are trying to accomplish as site admins, that being an easy to use and active forum.

I am not familliar with the site admins here or the software package they choose to run but I am aware that there is a lot of recent activity with upgrades. I am sure that they are very in tune with the spam issues and are considering them in the grand scheme, give them time to get a grip on the 'bots with the new software and I'm sure it will all be fine.

I personally have not seen any spam here, but I'm not here every day either.

Jason has already removed the krap in question in the "fixed wing" arena (and others).
