To further add to what I use. My tool box is a 6 drawer plastic box which was for the fishing guy's. The drawers are full width (17") and the botom one larger. I can carry a lot of spares for field emergency's. This normally stays in the vehicle unless I am there for the day.
When considering materials for building a box and you have your design worked out you can not go wrong with making it out of a material like plastic. When it gets dirty all you have to do is spray it with cleaner and it looks as good as new. When making it out of wood there is a lot of work to sand, fuel proof and then paint it. With plastic you can roughen the edge and CA it together. I also ran a thin bead of goop or something like that around the inside to seal the seams. Having it made with plastic I have not made another in years.
