You are correct about it being hotter.
On the down side I have melted part of a muffler with just a propane torch.
Some of the mufflers may be of a low grade cast aluminum.

You need to be careful with the heat.
Especially on thin stock.

Re: dura fix aluminum welding rods

ok been working with those aluminum rods that ken sent me and here what i got so far.
you know little second hole in a heli muffler the one you tighten the screw up to much and the threads strip. well i decided to try and fix that and here what i got. first pic

took a little work to figure out how hot to get the muffler but in time you just know.
a little grinding and some buffing you wouldnt know it was even there.dont forget to drill out the hole so as to not leave any oil or dirt in it as the aluminum will not stick to the sides.
my buffer is at the shop...later on in the week i will buff it up and post a pic.

ps ::extruded aluminum if very hard to weld together...been working on a way to do that stuff.
will post my findings

Re: dura fix aluminum welding rods

I have scoured every welding shop both in Windsor and the Detroit areas and there are many many products that make fantastic claims. Most have limited success with a few that performed acceptably. None offered a workable solution to completely building a muffler until I ran into this one. http://www.tinmantech.com/ Make no mistake this is not your inexpensive repair this is the real thing. Old techniques of aluminum welding, brazing and soldering. The same system most muffler manufacturers use today. The reason I like the three systems is it allows you to weld the larger items at a higher melt temp then add the smaller stuff with a lower melt temp so the first stuff does not come apart. I have built quite a few of my own mufflers and a few for friends that allow in cowl fitting without having to cut away pieces of the cowl.

Some examples I posted here

My most difficult challenge so far was making a light exhaust for my Technopower Radial
