When in civilian clothes, stand, (quietly) remove your hat for the raising of the flag or playing of the national anthem; your own or that of a recognized foreign government. If in a military uniform, rise, stand to attention and salute. That's what I was trained to do, and still do.

It's simple respect, nothing more; and a good dose of it in many quarters wouldn't hurt.
