Does anyone know of a " rule of thumb" for engine head temps? How much of a difference is there between 2- stroke and 4- stroke?

Re: engine head temp

In the ultra-light community 2c CHT's of over 400 deg F would cause a seizure in short order. A friend of mine has a 4c engine in his and has experienced CHT's of over 475 deg F with no ill effects. We take a reading from a copper ring thremocouple under the spark plug, of course these are gas engines not glow fuel.

Re: engine head temp

I usually go by performance, sound and touch. If after a flight, I can leave my finger on the bottom, on my helicopters, for 3 to 5 seconds, I am good!

I do the same for my 4 strokers in my planes.

I run my engines on the slightly rich side!

In my experience with testing model 2 and 4 stroke glow engines (with a thermocouple placed as close to the glow plug as possible) over quite a few years and dozens of engines - many seem to run in the 250F to 350F range.

300 F to 350F seems to be the "ideal" running temperature with many engines.

I have found gasoline enginges run hotter in general, maybe 50 F more (typically).

Of course, all this depends upon your test equipment, locality/season/outdoor temps/ect.

I think if you are at or below 350 F you are fine.
