Have a DL50 in my SIG Sun Dancer, It is pretty noisy, what is the best way to quieten this baby down?
The only "stupid question" is the one you don't ask.

"The only "stupid question" is the one you don't ask."

I used to believe that too. Then I ran into the general public.

Anyway, back to your DL50. I have a friend who ran a DL50 in a Wild Hare Sukhoi, connected to a cannister. Reasonably quiet. Much quieter than stock muffler. However, the trade off was significant power reduction and roughly 350 grams more weight.

He says cans add weight and rob power so that was no surprise. You may need to consider an alternative. After all, every airplane is a compromise.

Re: DL 50 exhaust noise

1)change to a bigger diameter/lower pitch prop? Will reduce the revs but not noticeably change performance.

2)Pitts style muffler with smaller exhaust pipes? (bigger diam=more power more noise, smaller diam=quieter and slightly less power (but probably not noticeable for most users).

Re: DL 50 exhaust noise FIXED

I have a friend with DL50 and he put an insert inside the original pipe and drilled 28 holes in it .
Procedure was copper pipe to fit inside pipe 24 mm
Weld CAP on top.
Upper top side facing port drill 28 holes .
Run bolt and nut inside new pipe and tighten to top of muffler.
I am doing this now for strength as pipe is known to break off .
I am considering using hi heat silicon between full length of new pipe and old pipe.
You can get copper pipe 24 mm at Rona.

My question for all out there is ----would silver solder stand the heat .
The fellow that did this had no power loss but ran much much quieter.
