Rather than read a great deal of misinformation and conjecture about our insurance coverage, all MAAC members should go to:

There, all of your insurance questions are answered.

While you are at it, read the safety code, Abiding by this code is one of the conditions of your coverage. Take note that "Field layout" applies to sanctioned club fields. It is not required for a single flyer, flying safely out of a farmers field (with permission) to follow all of the conditions of field layout.

Re: no insurance?

Thanks for clarifying, Richard.

I see that sections 4.2.16 through 4.2.18, inclusive, of the Safety Code contain references which indicate that they only apply to club affiliated member registered fields. These exempt the "home flyer" from requirements for safety fences. However, many other sections of the Safety Code do not state that they only apply at club affiliated member registered fields, and impose impractical responsibilities on the "home flyer".

I think the safety code should be modified with the following changes (in bold italics)

4.2.4 - As a minimum, transmitter frequencies (shall) be controlled utilizing a MAAC Frequency Board and pilot frequency pins at club affiliated member registered fields.

4.2.7 - R/C Pilots shall announce any intention to take-off, land or move onto the active runway where other pilots or spectators are present.

4.2.14 - At club affiliated member registered fields, R/C Pilots (shall) control their model aircraft from marked Pilot Stations. Take off and landing may be done from the runway if the intention is announced to the other R/C Pilots.

4.5, Figure 1 - FIELD LAYOUT (Minimum Requirements for club affiliated member registered fields)

As the Safety Code currently reads, all R/C pilots are required to abide by the above policies, regardless of where they fly. This may not be the intention of the Safety Code, but if a claim wound up in court, it would not be difficult for a lawyer to have a claim dismissed on the basis that I did not have marked pilot stations in my field or a frequency board posted.

I am sorry for spreading misinformation in my previous posts. I had mentioned that warning signs and fences were a requirement of the safety code for all sites, which I now understand to be incorrect. However, after giving the Safety Code a thorough read, I believe the above policies still prevent coverage for the average "home flyer".

Just my 2 cents.
