flying sites - Victoria area

My brother in law is a 1:1 glider pilot but is unable to fly full size now due to health reasons.

My sister gave him two electro gliders and I have set them up.

Fantasy from Icare Rc 3.5 M

Jantar 2.5 M (I installed an Axi)

They just moved to Colwood, and we were looking all around the area last week for a suitable field or slope to test 'em out to no avail.

Can anyone here point us to a good slope or field? (MAAC sanctioned hopefully).

thanks.

There is a group that used to meet up at the Fairground in Saanich, not sure if they are still active, every time i have been up there nobody home, some flyers go up to the Dallas road and fly off the cliffs there, but there are a lot of pedestrians and dogs.
There is only one MAAC sanctioned club in the CRD area and that is a virtual closed shop, and no gliders.
There are groups looking for places to fly, and would like to have a MAAC sanctioned club but it is tough finding the space here.
Best of luck, I have a glider here and never flown it in three years of living here.
most people find a school playing field or park and fly small electrics, hoping not to hit anything and incur liability.

Re: flying sites - Victoria area

since the last post I have found a couple of guys who fly thermal at the Observatory and several other sites around here, the access to some of them is a little tough, noting the health aspect.
There is also a local forum in Victoria there are quite a few fliers that will be more than happy to help and there is the social side to that as well.

Re: flying sites - Victoria area

Thanks for the link, I'm going to check that out (site is down since Feb. 4!).

I'm still building a 2 meter Bobcat (other stuff gets in the way, but inspiration takes over now and then!) and I'll be looking for a place to fly when she's done!

Cheers!
