You actual first stop after the hobby shop should be the Guelph Gremlins, the local model aircraft club (that is, if you're not already a member of some club).

Club and MAAC membership has its advantages in that you get to make use of the experiences of others by having your plane checked out by the instructors during constructin to make sure that you don't make a major mistake. Yes, most of the planes suggested are good and easy builds, but a total beginner can make mistakes like gluing twice before fitting the parts....) The other major advantage is that you get the use of instructors who will take you through the learning process with hopefully no crahses or major pranges.

Learning on your own is a guarantee tha you'd be doing a lot of repairing before you get the basic skills nailed down.

Flight simulators are good approximations but real-world experience is still the best teacher.

Re: first build

A not so secret tool is the thermometer for the iron when it comes to the covering portion of your build.

Great to hear there's a local club for you to join.

Ask the instructors in the club which trainers they recommend and find out which radios are compatible with the clubs buddy box.
