Rick - you always told me to blame the plane and I am sticking to it ....that's why I have a pilot in all my planes, it is always his fault !

Re: Contests?

I to am not to much of a fan of a one day contest for the smae reasons as have mostly been expresssed.

I do think it is a good idea though to perhaps charge the one day competitor less or a discounted rate. It mite bring some new blood into the field.

There has been some discussion on FG about only letting a pilot fly 3 or four contests in Basic then make him move up to Sportsman. Thids has pros and cons and maybe best left for another thread which I think I will start!

Re: Contests?

I am not a fan of one day contest either. Like many pointed out; it may not be worth the travel time to get to a contest just for a day. I also feel One Day Contest diminishes something more than 24 hours. However it sounds like an honest attempt to get some new blood in to the scene. I like your idea of reduced registration fee for one day contestants. It is good to consider ideas to motivate people competing in Scale Aerobatics, even just for a day. If one day pilot comes in first three, present him/her the print out his/her standing after one day.

Re: Contests?

If you go with one day contests, then you will more than likely limit your contestants to local people who are within driving distance. The positive is that you will probably get that local one or two guys who only has only either the Sat or Sun available to fly. Although, I think you will lose more than what you gain in guys who won't bother because it's not worth the drive for them.
Personally I like 2 day contests for a few reasons; One, it makes it worth the drive and two, it ads to the social aspect of the event. I look forward to the Sat night dinner, the hotel/camping, etc. I think one of the big reasons, that IMAC/contests are so popular and gaining popularity is because of the fun social aspect that goes along with it. Bob Sadler (the mouth from the south) always says at large events, that it's 90% about the people and 10% about the flying. I tend to agree with him, maybe to not that scale, but if it weren't for the fun factor of the guys I fly with, I wouldn't be that interested in attending events.

Re: Contests?

We held two 1 day contests here in the Maritimes this summer with great success. Although there was limited number of contestants (10) we did lots of flying. We choose a central location (Truro, NS) so everyone had a equal amount of driving. We did not fly Unknowns or Freestyle so that reduced the time needed.

Re: Contests?

A one day event is great as an introduction to Scale Aerobatics.
Less pressure on organizers and competitors -
We're looking at a 1/2 day introduction at the Northern Ontario Zone fun fly next year (July 18,19 at Cambrian Field - home of the NOIC) . we've had very good success with running just one round at the Sault's annual fun fly also. Gives exposure to the SIG without all the pressure of a full blown contest.

Re: Contests?

Ditto Sam it's all about the "FUN" aspect of the contests and yes the Saturday nights are the best.
