Re: a-10 crash at Monster

What I really saw was that the snowfence was totally inadequate in stopping the Hawk. The plane slid under the fence. Posts were about ten feet apart, great for holding it up and looking pretty, but not enough "meat" to stop the plane. That's the basic reason for having a safety fence in the first place.

Event organizers are probably looking at a lawyer's letter and a serious bill, once the pilot cools off and sees the video.

Re: a-10 crash at Monster

I was there participating in the event. The guy in the yellow shirt, on the walkie-talkie, is a member of the flightline crew. The spotter for Bob Levine, the A10 pilot, is the guy in the red shirt.
The Hawk that crashed was coming in for a landing but only the nose and left main gear came down. The pilot was trying to stall the plane in, but you can see what happened.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The safety fence was totally inadequate for the size and weight of planes taking part in the event.
After all this happened we all stood a long way from the safety fence when flying.
The fence was at most 2-3 ft. from the edge of the runway, and maybe two feet high, hard pressed to stop a .40 size trainer let alone the big iron.

Bob Levine's spotter should have seen it coming as the Hawk had made a pass or two trying to shake down the errant gear, but we all know about hindsight.
There were a couple of things that I found odd about the event was that there were No inspections and the pilot's meeting was held on the second day of flying.
I had a great time, met a lot of wonderful people and will seriously consider going again next year.

Cheer, Dave.
