We have come a long way the last 50 Years!
This is how I first learned to fly Gliders back then
Launched by a huge bungee on a hill
No inclosed cockpit or fancy instruments- but man was it fun
I guess that kind of gives my age away!!
Pictures are from a Gliding center in Germany
Where they strictly fly old antic planes

Re: A little Nonstalgia!

I remember in the 60's when I was stationed in Europe the local guys had a small truck they used to hook on with and then took off down the runway with one in tow. Then they found a winch and mounted it on the truck. I don't know how they controlled the winch but if they wanted a real high start they ran the line out and started winching and then off went the truck with the guy shifting gears. They got some real high starts.
That's what I remember when over there and we spent hours watching as it was on our heliport but we also had a grass runway which they had permission to use. They had lots of places like that for gliders.
