Lipos at -20?

Hey guys,

I just realized that I left a fully charged lipo in my car for a week and it's been -15 to -20 for the last couple of nights. Have I done any damage? I brought it in to warm up but plan to fly on Saturday. Can we have a discussion on lipo performance in cold weather...I hope to do lots of flying this winter.
Thank you,

Re: Lipos at -20?

From what I've heard, LiPos do not like being cold at all. I would check the voltage on the pack and see where it is. Then I'd be inclined to discharge it down to 3.5v/cell and give it a slow recharge. Just to make sure all is well.

And keep an eye on it.

Re: Lipos at -20?

Here are some tidbits i'd found..

store in cold = bad
run in cold = fine

Keep the pack warm until use, use it, then keep it warm after use until you can recharge

Answer from MaxAmps....

Well pretty simple guys. Always start with a full pack. And always a room temp or warmer. If you use a heating pad I would suggest, and this is only a suggestion. Warm the pack into the 80 degree range and no more than 100 degrees. Pack loose capacity in the cold. The colder it is the more they loose. A good example is I have a plane that flies on a 3S 1550. I can fly it for 12 to 15 minutes in the summer. Now in the cold I can get 5 to 6 minutes on a room temp pack at 25 to 30 degrees.

Re: Lipos at -20?

Thanks everyone for the great info...after I brought the batt back in and topped it off it was fine. Flew the EZ glider pro today in the snow and my flight times were great.
