I love to build personally, time doesn't permit often, but should one really be complaining about the cost of an ARF when it's still the more economical way to go? Yes they've gone up, but so has everything else with the dollar difference. It's to bad not all modelers were around when the price of a good 40 size two stroke was $180 and a 5 channel non computer radio was $350...
ARF's are still an inexpensive way to get into the hobby and a quick way. I've custom built airplanes for people, and an ARF is a heck of a lot cheaper than having somebody build for you

Really??? Are you suggesting that an ARF kit that cost $200.00 back in May or June is now $800.00 - $1,000.00?

Re: Cost of Arfs

I started this hobby in 1975. Back then you bought a kit at the hobby store and all the extras to finish it. This process took several weeks/mths, I was 8 then. There is a level of pride and caution that building ARF's cannot give you as you took your new model to the field for its first flight. It seems now we have less free time in our lives to spend building models. Don't get me wrong I have several large kits on the go right now. ARF's fill that need to fly and fly NOW. What I am seeing now is less and less people knowing how to really set up a model, incidence, thrust-line etc. The other thing I see is the old time hobby store giving way to mail order and high volume stores. I really enjoyed going down to the hobby shop and talking R/C to the guys. Now it seems they want you in and out with little or no customer service or knowledge of the product....... To the ARF population- build a kit! you will never feel more rewarded when your model takes to the sky!

Just my 2 pennies worth

I'm pretty sure he was joking around, the whole line that he wrote was:

I'd say it's more of a big exaggeration personally. The prices have gone up 20% - 30% from what I've seen, of course, when you add on another 22% for the difference in the dollar it makes it worse, but they're still a bargain!

Re: Cost of Arfs

I know for myself I have not "built" a "kit" (words of days gone by i guess) since I was a kid living at home! With that said Sukhoi has a good point, people simply want to open the box and fly! But we should all take the time to slow down and build a model! I will never forget spending time with dad in the workshop.

i am literally on a break from building(I'll be back in 15 minutes!). you guys said it best, the pride in seeing what you have crafted fly cannot be measured in dollars. sure it costs more to build, but the satisfaction level is greater too. i am on my third plane in as many months and love the smell of sawdust and glue in the winter. john

Talking Re: Cost of Arfs

I dont know about gettinginto the air fast. I ordered an ARF last February. Guess what it still hasnt come in from HANGAR 9. I could have built 4 of them by now. So I cancelled the order and got A Royal Zero And a Unionville Beaver for under $30. No more H9 Arf's for me. Tom

I think that the biggest jump that I have seen is the H9 twist .46 it used to be 89.99 now it is 224.99 that is 2.5 times the cost.

Re: Cost of Arfs

Like the price of gasoline, it will soon be at a five year low.
