LiPo building/modifying

I realize LiPo's are considered a very touchy subject as far as messing around with them goes but I was wondering if anyone here has modified their batteries? I understand how the wiring works between the cells and my goal is to remove a cell from each battery to make 2 3-cell packs into 2 2-cell packs. I was thinking of using the two left over cells to make a 3rd pack but I figure that it wouldn't be worth the risk since the cells wouldn't be matched or balanced to each other.

I have the heat shrink and tape torn off of them and they have fairly long tabs for soldering to (long enough that I can attach a heat sink between where I'm soldering and the cell) so I'm not too worried about getting them too hot during the process. They are both brand new batteries of the same model. I'll obviously be doing this outside and monitoring them very carefully during their first few charges/discharges... but my main question is... has anyone else done this?

Re: LiPo building/modifying could just ask and maybe someone has a spare 2 cell pack to send you
at no charge and you can build planes instead?

Go for it! Keep a video cam handy so we can all see the fireworks

What size of battery are you talking? Is it worth the effort/risk? I've wondered if this was possible myself, but didn't want to try without knowing for sure.

I keep having the same mechanical problem. I've got a loose nut on the transmitter!

Some tabs will not take solder and are spot welded..
Make sure you can solder them before you take them apart.
I've made 2 and 3 cell packs from single cells and have not experienced any problems.
Best to use a balance charger if you have one.

Re: LiPo building/modifying

What risk? if you understand the wiring and have some soldering skills...what risk?

soldering lipos in series would be no different than soldering nicads in series.

With either type, don't short a cell, don't over heat a cell.

neither type is gonna blow up in your face.

I personally have not made up packs, but on two occasions I have removed a punctured cell from three cells packs leaving usable two cell packs. not a big deal.

and no, I wasn't the one who crashed and punctured the cells. and no, they did not blow up when they were punctured. they didn't smoke. they didn't catch fire. they just lost the voltage from the punctured cell.

as for the two extra cells not being matched, I seriously doubt any lipo packs have matched cells. I've never seen any mention of this in lipo ads and if they were doing this they sure would be touting it as the reason for new and higher pricing.

Re: LiPo building/modifying

The tabs are like aluminum foil - extremely easy to tear (been there done that ). You will also probably need flux and solder meant for aluminum to do this.

I've done it before. Would I do it again? No. It's not worth the hassle to me.

Mine is not to reason why; I just wire them up to fry...I mean Fly!
