Look in the exhaust port and look for scoring or damage to the side of the piston. Look across to the other side and inspect for the same. The side of the piston should be free of carbon. Put a few drops of fuel or oil in the exhaust, then turn the engine over slowly and watch for bubbles in the exhaust port or air leaking noise in the intake. If you have this remove the head and check the cylinder for scoring. OS parts are quite expensive. If you have scoring you are looking at replacing the Piston, Cylinder and Ring.
