Wrongo! May not have all the facts but this is how the perps operate -- you get a fake money order that looks good, roll it through your bank account and give the extra funds to the person pikcing up the purchased item. They depart with cash in hand.

Problem is that it takes a few days (at best) for the bogus money order to get back to its source and then be declared counterfeit. Your bank then removes the value of the money order from your bank account.

Most banks have pages of warnings on such activities on their websites, and the perps keep finding people who'll fall for it.

I advertised an old clunker and got an offer for $15thousand for a $2thou car, the balance to be paid to the person picking up the car. Person got told to FO&D, and e-mail got passed to the local police team for internet fraud.

got a laugher today -- email supposedly from Revenue Canada stating that I had a refund due of $257.45 or something like that. News on TV last night had an item on internet fraud, and guess what the featured fraud was? Does Revenue Canada refund strike a familiar chord.

Considering that I e-filed my return with the refund going into my bank account, it's pretty ahrd for me to believe that I'm owed a refund and they don't know my name.....

BTW, my Nigerian scam email record is $22.5 million US owned by a white farmer in Zimbabwe who doesn't have friends outside the country.

Re: Internet Fraud

<<Its too bad there are getting to be more and more dishonest people in the world. Ordinary citizens are becoming a minority it seems. With times being as tough as they are, things like this will be ever increasing. >>

If anyone watched Larry King on Monday evening, he had Judge Judy on as his guest. and she got asked the question on whether or not the number of villians was increasing and whether or not most of them are poor. Her response came that you can't categorize the poor like taht. The fact is that it comes down to people's propensities -- if you're of the mindset that you will not steal, you most likely will not steal. Period.

It's not that the villians are increasing in number, they're just getting web-enabled and finding the gullible people around the world.

A healthy sense of "say what?" should be applied to everything that you receive, either via e-mail, mail or phone. Just because someone says that they work for company A doesn't mean that.

SHow up at my door and produce ID, let me check to see if you really do work for company A, and then we'll talk, with me still ahving the option of calling the police or siccing my assault-trained wanna-be Rottweillers on you.

OK, my example is going a bit over the top (uh, a LOT over the top) but that's part of the problem.

People get sucked in, and people run around waving red flags and crying that the sky is falling.

Let me be succinct: warning received and appreciated. End of conversation.
