Paint for 1/4 scale Neiuport 17.

I know that there are at least a couple of people here who have built this model so I would like to see if someone who knows could help me with a couple of the details on the model?

I am wondering what would be the best type of paint to use to do the colour scheme on a BUSA 1/4 Scale Neiuport 17? And if you might know if the colour is grey or is it silver or whatever?

Seeing that I will be using a gas engine, I was wondering if just ordinary latex house paint would be ok and if so, should I use flat or semi gloss? OR would you recommend using some other type of paint OR Dope? I will be painting over Super Coverite or Super Shrink, pre glued fabric.

I don't plan on doing a tremendous amout of scale detailing but I would like to do some. And I would like to have the paint as close as possible to the proper colour for this model as I can get it. Should Super Shrink be primed before the colour coat is applied if I am to use paint?

I got the urge to build this model from the movie "Flyboys" and in the movie, most of the planes (Neiuport 17's) are all grey or is it silver, with only the cowl and wheels having various colour schemes.

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated.

JUST one other thing. Would anyone have any drawings or details on how the ailerons work on the full sized Neiuport 17. The kit has the option of using scale detailing for aileron linkages (Non functional - just for looks.) so I was hoping someone might have a drawing or some details as to just how this actually worked on the full size plane. Here again, if I am going to go through the trouble of doing this detail, I would like it to look good/proper, and not just put on there for the sake of having them.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Paint for 1/4 scale Neiuport 17.

HI Garry

Have you thought about using the heat resistant BBQ spray. It comes in a lot of differant colors and Id put money down silver or grey is avalable,
As for Nieuport info I have Nieuport aircraft of ww1 by J M Bruce If you were closer I'd lend it to ya.
Looks to me that they were a very "silver" grey much more to the silver side. And any trhread I;ve seen has them painted more silver. Try Areodrome RC message board or RC universe I'm sure there are build threads there.

The Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa (Rockcliffe) has a replica Nieuport 17, finished in Billy Bishop's colours and markings.

Here's a link:

Maybe a quick trip and inspection would be in order? That should answer all your questions.

The ailerons were driven by these unusual looking horns, driven be 2 rods running to the upper wing from the cockpit. I'll see if I can find my full scale, completely detailed Nieuport drawings for you. Once you see how it's set up, all is clear.
