Noise in the Sky

My wife and I were outside this morning having coffee before I leave for work. This is a normal thing for us talking and enjoying the puppies running around. All of a sudden a loud noise appears sounding as if it was in the air, There was no real build up of this noise like way off in the distance and getting louder as it got closer. Next thing we see a weird looking plane fly almost right over our house . It looked very much in shape like the one in the picture and I wasn't 100% sure but it could have been a pusher prop .The big difference is the one in the picture is a RC airplane ,the one I saw was a full size plane Then it was gone sound also. Anyone have any ideas or is it a secret

Re: Noise in the Sky

Was it this?

http://www.flightglobal.com/airspace...gio-avanti.jpg

Its called a Piaggio Avanti, I have no idea how to pronounce it. Its a small corporate airplane. Very unique design. I see one every once in awhile at Pearson. They are very noisy. Daren

Re: Noise in the Sky

Probably a Rutan Long EZ or one of its follow on siblings such as the Velocity SE. Home built full scale aircraft are more interesting in their variety that the offerings from Piper, Cessna etc.

Re: Noise in the Sky

What you saw was more than likely a Velocity- Friend of mine finished one last year and are presently putting on hours in your neck of the wood- before hitting some planned cross country trips- it's a gorgeous 4 seater aircraft- You can also get an 1/4 scale RC ARF Model

Re: Noise in the Sky

I believe that Sheel Oil's got an Avanti flying out of Buttonville on a regular basis. The sound is unique due to the turboprops on the back end.

Only things noisier (pitch and beat rather than volume) are the Dash 8's being prepped for sale (test flown from Downsview) and this Cessna Skymaster based at Buttonville who seems to like following the main bus routes (Wellington/Aurora Road from one end to the other, turn and repeat, two-three hours at a time on Saturdays).

However, both the Avanti and Velocity designs are totally unique and make plane watching fun again.

Re: Noise in the Sky

Now I won't dispute that it looked like the Avanti but I am almost positive it was a single engine. The canards(front wing) if that is what they are called appeared to have the swept forward look as it does. It is also hard to tell if the other planes that people have mentioned are exactly it, as we were almost directly underneith it. mind you the one that had a 1/4 scale model would probably be it. not sure of where he meant when he said it was flying in my area. The route this one was on I would say was Barrie to London. Hey I am good I went to map quest and its almost a 100% straight line from Barrie, Elmira to London
