Burning, smoke, and stuff...

I have an RC10TC3 with the rally conversion on it. And bought a (new at the time) GT7, and Trinity D6 6T double motor.

I installed it, and ran two batteries through it, and then it died... no power.

So I left it alone for three years.... (I got hooked on chevy's)

Just yesterday, I resoldered all the leads that looked like crap. And soldered on a schottky diode in the proper direction.

I didn't even get through a full battery, and I was racing inside my house, not very fast at all, and it shut off. I looked in it, and noticed the motor (-) wire unsoldered itself. So I soldered it back on, and raced for no time at all, and noticed the body was filling with smoke...

The schottky diode was burnt, and cracked...

What the hell is going on here?? The GT7 says no motor limit. and the wires get dirty hot. What is going on with this setup??

Re: Burning, smoke, and stuff...

without holding it to closer inspection, I would have to guess

the external diode shorted out
the wire melted the solder join
you repaired it
the wire got hot again
the diode burnt out and released the magic smoke

it's been a long time since I did warranty service for Novak, but I imagine the theory still applies.

the GT7 has an internal diode, why did you add another diode?

Re: Burning, smoke, and stuff...

The manual for the GT7 told me to solder a schottky diode.

What would happen if I soldered two on? Or is that overkill?

Why would my wires get that hot in the first place? I understand the motor sucks alot of juice, but does that happen often??

Just a shot in the dark here but are you also using tamiya/molex battery connectors? You know the big white bulky ones?
