Re: Unused mixed Karo

I'm not sure how Dark you are talking about but Mixed kerosene will darken very quickly to some extent when exposed to the sun. I have used Kero that has been premixed for 6 months and no problem, had a brown tint to it.

Where you have to be careful is Kerosene has the ability to have algae grow in it, never seen it but it will change the color too.

not sure if I've been helpful but it's all I know

Has the lid been tight on it with a minimal air pocket?

Re: Unused mixed Karo

Yes you should be OK, oil darkens as it ages and you will notice your tygon tubing will typically darken as well the longer it stays in touch with the oil or the fuel/oil mixture. As long as your fuel has not seen dramatic changes in temp and humidity hence water is not present in the fuel you should be OK. We go through a lot of oil and the colour stays light but as soon as you leave oil in a container for a long time it will darken.

I have used oil from last year from a left over container and it was perfectly OK.

Re: Unused mixed Karo

I would pump it thru a filter first and also check to see water has formed in the bottom.

I just got my copy of RCJI and there is a really good article on Kero Contamination due to microbial growth which occurs wherever fuel and water come into contact. The aviation industry uses a product called Kathon FP 1.5 mixed with the fuel to manage this problem. Water is the main culprit however.

If I had a way to scan the article and post it I would. Maybe next week when I'm back in the office.

Re: Unused mixed Karo

Yes I used some mixed kero that sat over the winter , there was no problem
with engine performance however the filter down stream from the pump
filled up with a jelly like substance which I found out is a form of alge that
grows in the mixed kero if water/condensation is present.
