Unhappy Stupid Cub won't land

Was out flying my supercub this evening. It is a GP cub 40, full wing, with a 61 four stroke in it. After having a good time putt-putting around I began doing some low and slow passes over the runway. That was pretty nice too.

When I decided to land I had a heck of a time getting the plane onto the ground. I do not have a very long runway with some fairly high hay all around the edges. So it was a real challenge to get the cub into the slot over the runway and actually be able touch down before it was over the other end and into the grass.

The stupid thing just floats and floats and floats. There was no such thing as this plane to "settle" and decend on its own. After at least 10 passes of coming from what seemed up to 10 miles out on approaches, I gave up and I had to just fly it right to the ground. i was looking for enjoyment of greasing feather light landings, but the situation made that impossible. Thankfully I did not run out of fuel. After three flights with similar results and rolling off the end into the grass twice, I gave up and flew my ultimate biplane instead. What a difference!

Its been awhile since I'd flown the cub. This thing floats and thermals like a freaken 2m glider made of helium filled foam.

So short of adding another servo and deploying a chute over the runway at landing, are there any tips folks have?
Seriously, I know I will just have to spend some more time on it and practice some steep crabbing. That will probably take care of it.

It was a joy to dust it of and fly, but was frustrating to get back onto the ground. Anyways, thanks for listening. I just had a need to rant I guess.

Try mixing in some flaperons, made quite a difference on my Hangar 9 Toledo Special, I had the opposite problem of coming in like a bullet and now it just settles in smooth as silk.

Re: Stupid supercub won't land

I remember watching a guy in Halifax years ago having the same challenge. His solution was to do a side slip into the field with lots of down elevator and full flaps.
Came in almost like an elevator in a hurry.

Re: Stupid supercub won't land

You might want to consider a larger prop with a fine pitch. That way when you throttle back to idle that prop will act like a air brake.

Re: Stupid supercub won't land

I'm no expert at this, but one of our club members flies a big cub and uses side slip to get it down in tight situations. amazing to watch.

Re: Stupid supercub won't land

Yep, side slip and check your idle RPM. I often take a few clicks off the idle speed (throttle trim) once I'm assured a good landing.

Re: Stupid supercub won't land

If you have 2 ailreon servos and your radio has the mix function you can add about 5 dgrees of up aileron on both ails and use them as speed brakes. this worls very good.

Re: Stupid supercub won't land

Its a Cub there suppost to be light on the wing.I think you might just need some more time on the sticks as your use to a higher wing loading with your aerobatic types. To me a Cub should float around.Maybe your Flaps(if you have them and are using them,Super Cubs have them)are giving you to much lift as a friend has a 1/3 scale and had to much lift when deployed. He stopped using them and injoy's the plane alot more. This is just my thoughts,John
If I could fit in my plane I would
