Red face Making a fibre-glass wing tube help!

Hi Guys!

Iam going to attemp making a fibre-glass wing tube for my model tonight - I figure to wrap my Alum wing tube with 4-5 layers of wax-paper then 4-5 layers of fiber-glass cloth before it gets epoxied. Any fool proof methods out there?

Would Alum foil be better than wax paper.

Plastic wrap may be better than wax paper - thinner and thus less slop or wiggle on the finished tube inside.

Re: Making a fibre-glass wing tube help!

I gather you are making the outside so you can slide the connecting tube inside. 4 or 5 layers will give you some slop and if you cut back to 2 layers you would be better off. It won't be much of a problem on smaller type models but when talking large there will be quite a bit of movement at the tips which would be prone to tube or wing failure. When I made a couple I found to get the core out I had to use a twisting motion to the reverse of the wrap. If you twist the same direction it tightens up.

Put some vaseline on the tube under the wax paper and use a credit card or similar to remove air bubbles from under the paper. It will suck down nice and close to the tube but be easy to remove. You only need about a layer and a half this way.
