I attended the Arnprior Remote Control Club Fun Fly today and we had some guests from the Rideau Flyers Club (Ottawa) ...Bill Nochol and Gerry Pronovost...These guys are flying from the cockpit with a video down link and I got the chance to try this... They are using a set of video game hood glasses which are nothing more than a set of goggles which are like watching a 57" LCD TV...It is very much like flying a real aircraft...what a great experience...

At first it was difficult to maintain a constant altitude as I was pointing the nose at the horizon which resulted in a slight climb but Gerry coached me on the errors I was making and I took to it quickly is so much different from normal RC flying...BTW Gerry is 76 years young and still pushing the boundary's of the RC hobby!

All I can say is WOW! and s big thanks Bill and Gerry!

Re: Flying RC from the Cockpit

I had an opportunity to try some goggles early this spring and found it to be a really cool experience! This was setup on a Cularis glider, and it was certainly very neat to see everything from the plane!

Re: Flying RC from the Cockpit

Flying using remote viewing goggle is covered under MAAC's rules. There are some fairly simple requirements and conditions.

The biggest condition is that there be two pilots in the loop, one without the goggles and observing to make sure that the plane is being flown in a safe and controlled manner.

A search of the MAAC website, including the President's mnessages will give you the details.

Re: Flying RC from the Cockpit

2 of us did it at our field last year. The landings are quite unnerving with 8 foot grass in the viewer.

We put the headset on the guy with the buddy box with the other one of us on the master radio. Then we landed and switched. The perspective you have is amazing. We'll be trying it again, but it was one of those things that you have to try if you get a chance.
