Big difference is in the flux. Resin flux, as you've found out, doesn't work well with the hardened wires we use. The Staybrite flux is acid based and why it works well. Wash the flux off with water to get rid of the acid to stop the inevitable corrosion. The staybrite flux works well with ordinary 40/60 solder too. Put the flux on, put the heat to it. when you see the flux start to boil put the solder to it. Don't get your nose to close, not good for you.
Tried for my kamikazi pilots licence. Flunked the test.
