Finally Flying again...

Well it seems that for the past couple of years my flying time has gone really down. When I was yonger living at home and just starting out in the work force it seemed that I was out at the field every weekend and a couple times per week. But these last couple of years my time on the sticks has really gone down. I guess as I get a little older, work seems to get a lot more serious, and moving to downtown Toronto makes it hard to get out of the city to get to the field during the week (actually by the time I get out of work, walk home change get in the car and fight the traffic on the DVP and 401 for an hour or so, i've lost my patience to fly) As for weekends I seem to be at the cottage as my folks seem to need a little more help around the cottage in the summers as they age so my usual weekend jaunts to the field were replaced by working weekends at the family cottage, and when I did have a chance to fly the seawind at the cottage it was too late or windy to fly.
When I do have the weekends "off", I seem to be running around the city doing errands or seeing friends, and I don't make time for the hobby, heck I don't even have kids or a serious significant other (I have no idea how you guys who do manage??!!) This past weekend I forced myself out of the house and from the front of the TV to head to the field with an electric Zagi that I bought 3 years ago!! I was a little disapointed that no one was at the field but I put in the battery did a range check and wham up in the air...then wow that old RC rush was back it was great had 5 flights before another member of the club showed up, then some more guys showed up. I caught up with an old friend, introduced myself to some the the new "regulars" it was awesome one guy even flew his turbine trainer Wow just what the Dr. ordered, heck I am totally recharged and have made time this weekend to head out to the field again, and I find myself dreaming about RC at work again and it's great I guess when life gets you down just force yourself to the "field" and all will be good. |

Re: Finally Flying again...
I hear ya buddy.
I was an addict until I met the wrong woman. Unfortunately i was too stupid and married her for the wrong reasons. Didnt fly much after that (on account of her). Then came the divorce and "Being poor" Lived in a basement, so building was out of the question. Good thing I still had my planes from before marriage. I flew them when I got a chance but the excitment was no longer there. Then end of '08 I remortagaed my finances and started off in my own place with a REAL WORKSHOP. Participation at our club (where I am president) really improved over the years and this year was our best. Members enthusiasm is infectious and before you know it, I am into EDF's and have gotten my helis out of the cobwebs. Building like crazy now. Now its FLY FLY and FLY. (PS- the "new woman" that I have been with for a couple of three years is very supportive, not like the old witch!) Keep flying! Spread it around!

Re: Finally Flying again...
Way to go guys, we only get one pass, and one has to make the best use of it. Max, having your significant other behind you is the best, there is no griping about the time at the field or bench, if she has a hobby, return the support (mine quilts..darn if it isn't a great setup) !

Re: Finally Flying again...
Just get to the field and even if you think the wind is too much (well ok if its really howling) but get out there the sights sounds and some guys might be there, it sparks the interest again.

glad you came out again, rubbie.we all know how work and family will really take a bite of our time for flying and building but really it all boils down to us making the effort to set aside the time plus our significant other supporting us and vice versa.
same as max, i had a ex that did not like the hobby and was it a fight just to go to the field. you however , being single, can make it happen. so go and fly and make time for this wonderful hobby of ours. my father would surely be smiling from up above knowing that he lived for this hobby as well..... |

Re: Finally Flying again...
Even though I get out a fair amount, I understand where you're coming from. Now that the fall season has arrived, I can't get out during the week after work. And it has been pretty windy and rainy around Ottawa the last few weeks.
I get downright irritable when I don't get out to fly. I usually hit the sim when I feel the withdrawal symptoms creeping in, but sometimes there's just no replacement to the real thing. Glad you found your love of flying again! This has got to be the greatest hobby I've ever had the pleasure to get into!

Re: Finally Flying again...
I had one of those loving caring wives that was all about her and I think I flew 2 gallon's of fuel in the 3 years I was learning to fly. Then a couple of girlfriends later I go to my buddys and he shows me a Spad he built and tosses it in the air and hands me the remote a couple tence moments later I flew 4 tanks of fuel. I tell my Girlfriend about my day and she says you fly?? The next day we are at the hobby shop, she buys me a Discovery and the gear to get it in the air. So far she has bought me 4 planes including my 28% Katana, 26cc 260 rtf. So I cant complain.

Re: Finally Flying again...
Best...girlfriend...EVAAAR!
![]() My wife is pretty tolerant of my flying. She doesn't like how much I've spent in the past year, but now I won't have to spend much for the next couple seasons at least. She didn't even give me too much grief when I decided to go down to Chatham for the weekend, very last minute, to fly in the IMAC contest there. She just said "You owe me BIG!". Lol. Now I'm painting my son's new bedroom and installing crown moulding, and then I've got to renovate the bathroom. Totally worth it, though!
