mAh question

So here is the stupid question of the day, when I charge a 2500 mAh pack and my charger says it has 1859 mAh does that mean that the 1859 is the total put into the pack or is the 1859 the total mAh of the pack? I usually never get close to the stated mAh as I don't totally discharge my cells prior to charging them.

I know who let the noob on the electric discussion board

Re: mAh question

It means you have put 1859mAh into the pack. Typically if you are talking about nicad or NiMh then you should be cycling them a few times a year at least to make sure that your pack is performing properly. When you do cycle them, then you should be reading near the total pack mAh.

Re: mAh question

It would mean you put 1859 mah back into the pack. What type of battery are you using? SOme batteries should only be discharged to a certain level to be safe. If your battery is is in good shape based on those numbers you are discharging your batteries to alomost 25% of the packs total capacity.

Re: mAh question

to get a true reading of how mutch usable capacity your cells have you must discharge them first ,the lower the discharge rate(load) the higher the mha reading will be as it takes longer for the cell to reach the cut off voltage .what I do is discharge at the same rate as the application (flight pack /drive pack/radio)this will tell you how mutch usable capacity the battery has with your applied load(does not matter if a battery has 2500mah if the voltage goes too low at 1500mha under your required load).from that you can determine how long they can be used by seeing how mutch goes back in the cell after a given amount of use .

example /plane draws .5amp peak
you get 1800.mah @.5amp on a 2500 pack
after a 10 min flight you charge the cells and they take 500mha.

this setup would give you max 3 flights ,you can see the danger assuming because you have 2500 mah and only use 500mah per flight you should get 4 flights easy "NOT" . you just crashed the on fourth flight and was puzzled because there was lots left in the pack .Roger

PS:these are ficticious numbers for the purpose of example only
