Mines flying weight is around 10lb.

Its basically engine torque causing that. I try to be easy on throttle. but still not as stable as videos on youtube!

Re: Why my harrier is not stable?!!

What is the plane doing during the harrier?

Usually during the harrier you may "pin the elevator" but it requires some elevator control between 20 to 45 degrees and then when the plane starts wing tip stalling the RUDDER will be your most effective control. In some cases the prop wash combined with the high alpha attitude of the plane I have found that the ailerons don't respond as crispy as you would expect but in the right combination rudder-aileron then you can keep solid harrier.

What is your wing loading? Try to keep it below 26oz per square inch and see if your throws are either too high to enter the maneuver or too low.

Cheers,

Will

Re: Why my harrier is not stable?!!

Thanks for the info Will. Wing loading is 6 oz/sq inch (160/961). It hovers all right and I can fly it around the field, but all the time I need to stablize it!

Re: Why my harrier is not stable?!!

Hi there,

No problem, one thing though is that your wing loading is not 6 oz per sq inch.

If your wing surface is 961 sq inch and your weight is 10 lbs your wing loading is 23.98 oz per sq inch. I just wanted to point that out.

I have a YAK 54 100cc and I usually do a short harrier before entering a hover and I found that eventhough the plane is pretty stable, the wing tip stall tendency is always there. Again good rudder control and maybe another 10 gallons of fuel and you will be having a hoot!

Happy landings,
Will

Re: Why my harrier is not stable?!!

Some planes have a tendency to wing rock. I've read that planes like the Edge 540 and Cap 232 have much more stable harrier capabilities because the horizontal stab is mounted much higher on the fuse, allowing it to receive cleaner air and remain more stable.

I have a smaller Yak that wing rocks like nobody's business. It is downright snappy. My Steven's Aero Edge 540 (50") harriers very stable, but it is also very light. My 50cc Sukhoi lands somewhere in the middle. It wing rocks a bit in upright harrier, but not so much inverted.

Like Will said, rudder is very important, as can be a combination of all the surfaces at once, in varying degrees.

Burning fuel is the best solution to many flying problems. I burned through 2 full tanks just trying to fine tune the knife-edge mixing on my Sukhoi. Burning more fuel will fine tune any flying issues!

Try gap sealing your ailerons if they aren't yet and/or moving the aileron neutral position a little up or down. Experiment!
