Nieuport 17, Billy Bishop

Hello out there.

I am in the early stages of building a 1/3 scale Nieuport 17 with Billy Bishop's markings. I was wondering if anyone had any info on the following:

1. What was the difference in the cowl designs on the N17's? The ribbed seams were in different positions on various aircraft. Was this a design change over time, or was it a British vs. French version detail difference?

2. Did Bishop's plane have the C5 designation on the fuselage, or not, at any point in time?

Thanks, Brian

Brian......with a project of that scale you really should visit the museum in Owen Sound.
I've been there and it is really good, the people there are also very helpful and knowledgable.

Thumbs up Re: Nieuport 17, Billy Bishop

Here is the museum's web site -

In the picture I have ,from the book Fighter Aces by Christopher Shores , it has B1566 on the rudder of Bishop's Nieuport 17 dated August 1917 , 60 Sqn. No other numbers showing.

His plane had one machine gun on top of the wing. Some other Nieuport 17's had one machine gun on top of the fuselage right of centre.

From Winged Warfare by Billy Bishop :" Nieuport 17 WS: 27FT LENGTH ; 19FT 6 IN
Armament - 1 Lewis gun mounted on upper wing, fired over propeller & could be raised or lowered but not swung from side to side or fixed synchronized Vickers."

A promotional picture in his book taken by the RCAF has the registration blacked out.

There was a C & 5 on the plane and the nose cowl was painted blue by his crew after his engaging of the Red Baron outfit & shooting 3 of them down.

Good luck.

I hope you have a build thread of it.
