Hi Angus,
No the Firebird is a kit, not an ARF at all. Though there is much prefabricated there is a lot left to the builder including paint. At nearly 7K US these are not cheap kits, but there is not a badder or better large sport jet out there for all out high speed performance.
Here is a video of David Shulman flying Ron Longs firebird in Arizona

You can see more of the Firebird here:

Well, if you like speed Jerrmeister, it looks like this is the one for you. In the vid, the only time that you could see that it's actually a Firebird, was when he slowed down to land.

No need to do that Ron... As I'm sure that you are aware, Turbine Jets are much like sex. They're ALL great,,, just some might be better than others

Something fancier??? I'm tryin' Ron,,, but not holding my breath for this year.

Re: Fire in the sky

Sick video - as in I almost yacked on my keyboard a few times. DS is awesome - but some of those passes would have had me phsically removing the Tx from him Honestly I think he very very dangerous but safe to watch on YouTube.

The Firebird looks cool and its nice and big. Can they actually fly slow and "patterny" or do they have to be flown at 300mph all the time?

Re: Fire in the sky

Hi Chris,
I agree totally, I have zero issues with doing 300mph passes, hell, do them at 2 feet off the deck if you want (in fact at those speeds it's probably safer in case you do lose it, it has less distance to travel before impact) but do it well off the far side of the runway, not withing 20 feet of the flight line! I feel the same way about these 40% airplanes hovering 20 feet in front of the pilot, or 3D helicopters doing their thing right over the runway, there is no room for mistakes there and unfortunately our hobby grade equipment is not what I would call the highest technology.
The Firebird is definitely designed to fly fast, yes you can slow it down, but that's a relative thing, it's not a jet you can lumber around the pattern at 80mph like you can with a Bandit or Kingcat, Stall speed for the Firebird is in the high 40mph range.

As for Shulman, I know there was a discussion following that video with a few big names who weren't to pleased with the passes being done that close in.

I can't wait to see your work on this one (and the mods to *my* Super Bandit It will be going fast too - at a safe distance.

That wasn't as fast as your Firechicken is going to be. I was able to keep the KingCat in the frame of the camcorder's almost some of the time... lol
