The problem with the Apprentice was that because of its trike undercarriage it was very reluctant to take off from the fairly rough soccer field we fly on so I built a tail dragger SPAD fuselage & used the wing, tail feathers, Rx, servos, motor, battery, etc. from the Apprentice. Thus began an evolution towards my current everyday flyer which I will show over the next few posts. Here's version 1a (coro tail feathers not originals):

Then came version 2 with an aluminum box section for the rear end of the fuse rather than T section.

At this point, I decided the "Canadian gutter pipe" and aluminum combo. was too heavy so designed a spruce framed 2mm coro. covered fuse (as seen in background of previous post) still using wing & tail, etc. from the Apprentice. For obvious reasons, it became known as the "Green Machine." Flew very well & was reincarnated twice after visiting nearby trees!!!

Re: Post your Aircraft Pic's Here

Along the path of the evolution of this "SPADprentice" one of my goals became to try to make it the most indestructible trainer possible. After a "learning experience" (read nasty crash!) caused by using a 4 cell battery with an ESC that could handle only 3 servos at that voltage not 4, I decided a new fuse design was needed. I used ideas from several Stik fuse designs to come up with a new version of the Green Machine with a very tough Stik fuse (box sides are laminated 3/32" balsa & 1/32" ply, central crutch/formers are 1/8" ply, all glued with Elmers Ultimate Glue).

And finally, wanting more aerobatic capability, I replaced the Apprentice wing (and tail) with a built up 49" balsa/spruce version adapted from the ClassicUglyStik design available in various places on the web. Hence the current version of the Green Machine.

And in a parallel universe there was the Pink Machine - a coro/spruce concoction.
