I am moving toward entry into aerobatic flight from the level of learning basic RC control. I am looking for a "next aircraft" past the high wing electric trainers have flown.
I have spent many hours on the sim with many types of aircraft, but I am having some significant trouble discerning the differences between IMAC, pattern, and 3-D aircraft, and the flying that they do.
So far, what appeals to me as a next-step aircraft, is the 480 size 3D aircraft of about 48" wingspan, because they seem to be large enough to provide a stable platform from which to progress into diverse aerobatics.
Eflight has some, like the Extra 260 3D 480 and Sukhoi SU-26m 480 and even the Diamante 25e. Hangar 9 has the Funtana 40 and Pulse 40. Great Planes has the Edge 540, and the Extra 330, among others.
#1. Am I barking up the right tree with these as a "next plane"?
#2. Are there any known preferences amongst these manufacturers or models?

Re: Flight categories
I learned aerobatics on an eagle 2 after learning the basics of flight. You get much better at inverted flight when you can hold a plane with a ton of dihedral inverted.
