Re: Slope soaring compliance A little late but in response to the original post ... Go to the SOGGI.ca website for an example of how to get a slope site legally. SOGGI is a glider club near Hamilton Ontario that flies flatland at turf farms and they have an alternate club site on a slope that is on provincially-owned conservation land. They got permission from the conservation authority and have a process in place requiring daily notification if it is to be used (similar to filing a NOTAM.) It seems that this activity fits within the mandate of conservation/parkland use. Similarly, I am aware of exemptions given to paragliders operating in some national parks that ban aviation activities more generally (for example Jasper.) The argument made when asking for the exemption was that the gliding flight is environmentally friendly and the hiking in to do it had minimal impact (jokingly they told them they were only actually hiking up the slopes!) |

Re: Slope soaring compliance Yes, I am still sloping at a local slope 5 minutes from my house. Great spot with no houses close by. Been flying my 2m Yellow Jacket in very light winds, works great for slermal flying. Blake |

Re: Slope soaring compliance That’s the glory of the prairies......Yes, when I lived in Calgary, I used to head east to the hills, and pick a hill along a road that suited the wind. I once had a one hour thermal downwind of a slope near Rockyford, Alberta, in FEBRUARY. Mostly nobody knew or cared,and I was careful not to disturb cattle or crops. I once had a land owner stop out of curiosity, and it was fun to have him take the sticks for a minute. I don't get big thermals while flying slope here in PEI, and good cliffs are being ruined by subdivisions. |

Re: Slope soaring compliance Thanks Keith, yes the one that faces NW I have been using for some time and is a good one. I lost my South facing slope not because of the land owner but to a neighboring gun club who didn't want me there. I haven't tried my new south facing one yet but it is higher with possibilities of SE and SW facets so could turn out better. All of these slope have to be accessed by foot and it's quite a hike to the top but I respect that it is erosion sensitive land and the owners don't want ruts. I will get some pictures from the top to post as soon as I can get up there. |

One thing that was in there was that a club I belonged to a couple decades ago had several slope sites listed as alternate fields... but those were different days. The slopes you have out there sound interesting... |
