Re: (A couple of) Top Flite Giant P- 51D Kit Builds

I finished the fuselage tonight. Panel lines, RX, batteries, canopy, and finished up all the little things that take so much time. The canopy just wouldn't fit right to the fuse at the very front. Now it's time to move on to the wings and get this baby totally finished up!

Very nice! I've been flying a top flite giant scale P-47 but a big P-51 is still on my bucket list!

Nice. Have you done something to dull the finish or is it the lighting?

I finished up with the covering on the fuselage. I stuck with the old boy theme from the kit, the only thing left is the exhaust stacks and canopy. We'll I'll be adding panel lines but I will wait until the wings are done and it's all ready to rock.

My pilot I picked up on the cheap, repainted him "Maj fumbles" from my favourite robot chicken episode. Pretty decent paint job if I don't say so myself.

Re: (A couple of) Top Flite Giant P- 51D Kit Builds

Got a lot work done on the warbird last couple of days. I finished up with all the control surfaces, and hinged everything up (not permanently). Finished with my version of a home made cockpit, and finished construction and shaping of the cowl (top + bottom). Final sanded everything which led me to go out and buy some covering.

The biggest pain in the arse on the entire model was construction and finishing of the flaps! Holy heck topflite asks you too sand the LE of the flap round which is not hard, but then requires you to sand the same curve in the TE of the wing. Of course the wing gradually becomes thinner along the way so you can't even use a dowel with sand paper, all has to be done by hand and quite carefully as well.

Second pain the behind was the rad scoop , if you use the abs plastic provided which I did you will be struggling and screwing with it for a good 2 hours untill it sits right and the glue holds.

All in all, a good kit with more then enough wood provided for mistakes and boo boos. Very clear instructions and plans, even if you jump around from one chapter to another which I did at the end a little.

I give 8 out of 10 with the only negatives being that topflight loves to give giant god awful blocks of balsa for the tips, turtle deck, and top cowl. In my opinion a lot of weight could be saved and more consistent results would be given if more framing was used and not artist sculpting. That and there were some grade 2 spelling mistakes left and right in the instructions.

Those oak standoffs will be just fine. I've been using hardwood dowels for standoffs in everything up to 100cc aerobats. Nice work

Looking forward to seeing it finished!
