Re: How long can I store my Lipo without adding some charge

Thanks very much, Len. That is very helpful. I've got the bits to make one, but I would have forgotten about moving the negative along, and always used the black for negative.

Re: How long can I store my Lipo without adding some charge

I made up a short lead that plugs into my smart charger set for one cell and max 1 amp. rate and at the other end I have a 2 pin plug + and- that plugs into the balance plug. I can either charge the low cell or discharge the high cell to get them to match. For example; on a 4 cell pack if I have one cell that is low , I select those pair of pins in the balance plug and charge it to the voltage as the others . If I have two low I bring those up the the higher ones.

In the first picture shows the individual cell lead with the red + and the black - .
In the second picture you have it plugged into cell number one with the black - always toward the
the black- wire of the balance lead with the white being positive. To go to cell number two ; you plug into the next two terminals.
again, with the black always toward the black ground of the balance plug and so on. In this case , for cell number two , the white wire becomes ground (negative -) and the red becomes the positive +.

MAKE SURE THE TWO BANANA PLUGS ARE PLUGGED INTO THE CORRECT OUTPUTS OF THE CHARGER BEFORE PLUGGING INTO THE BATTERY OR YOU WILL SEE MANY SPARKS , IF THEY SHORT OUT.

Easy to make and if you want I can make them for you ....$6 will cover 4mm plugs, heat shrink, wire and pins and mailing first class mail at buyers risk ; no charge for labor. I just want to cover the replacement of my parts. PM me if you want one. Thanks

Very clever, Len.
Do you have a picture or could you post short description? I have a couple of LiPos that won't balance normally. They are only out by 0.02 or 0.03 V, so maybe that's ok, but I'm still interested.
Thanks,
Martin

Re: How long can I store my Lipo without adding some charge

The only batteries that may need cycling are the almost non existent Nicads and some
Nimh.

Yes , check the lipos to see if all cells match. If low , plug into your smart charger , set to storage and when it shows storage completed . Unplug and done. Suggested storage voltage between 3.8 and 3.85 works well. Not really critical . A big waste of time to discharge and recharge to storage... not needed.

Another suggestion though ...... if you just have one or two low cells in a pack ; I have made up a single cell
Charge lead and select that cell through my balance lead and bring the low cell up to storage charge.

Stickjammer Thanks for your help ive decided to check them all and cycle the ones that need a bit more charge

I've had Lipo's in storage mode for over 4 years with no issues after I started using them again. But I now check the voltage every few months to make sure. Cheers Floyd

Re: How long can I store my Lipo without adding some charge

I've been flying large electric for a long time, and I have some lipos that are over 5 years old and still going strong. Some info I found about long term storage that I've stuck with is to "cycle" them every 3 months. My charger (PL8 Duo) has this feature built in and it automatically puts the packs back to storage voltage after, simple plug and play. And I just do however many packs per day as is convenient till they're all cycled.

Re: How long can I store my Lipo without adding some charge

Just check the voltage of each cell. If it is at 3.79 or 3.80 (or a bit higher), leave it alone.

I keep a bunch of batteries "on reserve" I check my battery reserve once a year, and some of the packs have been sitting for several years and they are still at 3.8/cell

How long can I store my Lipo without adding some charge

So, at the risk of coming off as lazy... I haven't flown this past year or so but I know I will get the itch again in the Spring. I always leave my batteries at storage voltage however, theyve been stored now for more than one year. Constant temp is about 18 Celsius downstairs.

Should I be adding some charge to them periodically or am I ok to ignore them for a while longer? I have 12 so its a few hours of work. Ok that sounded lazy but the any intel on this front would be appreciated
