Re: Slope Soaring, is it alive and well?

Climbed my favorite north east facing slope this evening, forecast was for west wind 12 to 14 Km/Hr so I took the Fling Thing in anticipation of light lift. By the time I got to the top there was NO WIND! Wow! for a country where I swear the wind NEVER stops... well it does. As soon as you get to the top of the hill it does! Blew all day too!

So I launched it anyway and there was lift. Thermal lift about half way back out to the road. Good lift but at that distance the glider was too small to see properly so I had trouble with orientation. Ah well, good exercise for a fat old guy.

Oh yes, the wind was blowing again by the time I got home... go figure!

I hear rumors the USA guys have been given a speed limit.

MBerends He sent me pictures and a flight report!!!

That ASK looks great. I have an X-Cub for a Towplane also but mines a gasser. Curious to see how well it tugs as an electric.

Miss flying with those guys! Hopefully get a chance to do a few days this season with them.

Some great lift out this way too. We had a chance hit the slope and maiden a couple of new DS planes.

Yup and he was at it again today. You missed a great session Mike! Weather was perfect for thermals. First time I have seen a hawk fold his wings in half way and still go up like he was in an elevator!

MBerends The guys in California know how to go fast!!!

They are also some of the nicest guys in the hobby too. Always willing to share info and help out.

Pretty amazing going that fast! The top surface of the wing is actually breaking the sound barrier and causing a shock wave which creates drag.

Aerodynamics on a totally different level than we’ve been accustomed to in model aviation.

Speed freaks?

MBerends There’s lot of great rc conversions out there for the Walmart foam planes and lidl gliders.

We had a friend of mine on Vancouver Island convert a larger one and we flew combat against it...

It was the hardest plane to knock out of the sky!

Also had a friend of mine in Calgary convert one of the small ones with micro servos and it too flew great

Ya You just need to match the size and weight of the glider to the size of the slope. I think overpasses around the cities would provide a some good slopes for small gliders. If they are under the TC weight limit then no one could bellyache either! A $10 Walmart foamy just might be the ticket...

MBerends Was just looking at some of the posts above saying that there’s no hills in certain areas.

In all honesty, you don’t need much. I’ve slope soared on the smallest man made dirt hills on construction sites fo Dynamic Soaring an irrigation ditch close to my home with a bungee launch on the 15ft high front side then DSing the back side which is no more than 40 feet high with a foam and packing tape plane.

There’s always slope sites.... just need to be creative😜

I’ve attached the video of Dsing the small site.

MBerends Thanks! There’s a lot of new videos in the works for this season. Including a number of tutorials and how-tos.

We’ve been flying at the Cochrane location for decades. I actually used to Hang glide there.

The part of the hill we fly is privately owned and we have had interactions with the owners to fly there.

There is actually quite a number of sites all around our area where I have gotten permission to fly. Most owners are ok with you flying there if you approach them and let you know what you are doing. A lot of farmers actually come out to watch and are fascinated with it.

If you’re ever in our area contact me and I’ll organize a group outing.

With the prevailing west wind those late day flights definitely need good sunglasses... lol.

But a glider soaring effortlessly across a beautiful sunset is quite the sight
