Re: Durafly Sea Vixen

I have a Sea Vixen, never flown. I don't really care much for it. If someone is interested let me know.

Re: Durafly Sea Vixen

Went over to RCGroups and did some searching.

Found a hobby shopthat does offer the kit (somewhere in Europe).

Also found a discussion on RCG where someone was resurrecting their crashed Vixen from days-gone-by, so I chimed in with a request for the throws.

Check AeroFred.com and no signs of anything other than a Jetex version (free-flight -- bleh! ack! Ptooie!)

Re: Durafly Sea Vixen

I've been checking and cannot locate any info on the recommended control surface throws, anybody remember what they are? Would like to take it to the field on Sunday.

Had a bit of an issue with the Turnigy ESC's, two new bullet proof 80 amp Plush ones failed to work at all, frustrating. So, tried one of my new 70 amp Turnigy Delux ESCs and the EDF spun up perfectly. Installed every thing and ran it up, really high pitch turbine sound.
The numbers were 61 amp draw at full throttle, produced 1100 watts and settled down to 1050 watts. The battery is a 3600 five cell 25C Venom item.

Temperatures after about a one minute run, motor - 81F, ESC - 75F, battery - 121F

Got the landing gear installed. Checked the retracts of course before installing them. The nose strut was bent quite badly, so disassembled the retract unit and straightened it out, then trimmed it to install a oleo strut. Same as the one you used Eric. They are quite nice items. I'm now out of them so will order a few more. Also, will order straight oleo struts for the main gear as well.

After fitting in a five cell battery, I checked the CG, nearly perfect, according to a diagram I found on the web regarding this model. There's plenty of room to side the battery fore and aft, so putting in the receiver, separate BEC and 1000 mah two cell receiver battery will be easy.

I'll also be replacing all of the servo extensions as well, those long 24 gauge extensions bother me.

Re: Durafly Sea Vixen

The top colour turned out a near perfect match for the pre-painted plastic parts. Just used an artists brush to apply the latex instead of spraying it. So was able to paint around most of the decals. Turned out pretty good, no visible brush strokes. No attempts were made at this time to fill in any of the slight breaks in the nose cone area. If it flies well enough, I'll spend the time to do that.

The colour of the paint for the undersides I got is quite a bit off from pictures of the real plane, so I'll need to return to Home Depot to get another bottle of paint, could white this time.

Going to keep it pretty much stock, easy to do and easy to touch up. Just changing the numbers to match a Sea Vixen that is being restored in England.

Looks great John. Good job on the rebuild. Are you going to change the color at all or keep it the stock? I did not see too many different scale color schemes for this type of aircraft.

Re: Durafly Sea Vixen

Pretty happy with today's restoration progress, looking like a Sea Vixen finally. A little rough for wear at the moment, but, that will be changed. I've found the paint they used isn't that great, even low tack masking tape easily removes it.

After a light sanding with 3M sanding pads, I will spray paint latex primer on, this helps with adhesion so I can use the masking tape from the dollar store.

Re: Durafly Sea Vixen

Got the 1/16" fiberglass rods imbedded on both sides of each tail boom, they are very stiff now, huge improvement.

So, without missing a step, epoxied both booms to the wings, 30 minute epoxy and cabosil filler, made it like a paste so it's very gap filling. Also made a fillet on the inside edge on each seam so as to clean up the wing joint.

The horizontal stab is just stuck in place, not glued to help keep the booms aligned. Will take it to Home Depot tomorrow to get the colour scanned.
