Re: Skyward 120

Len is 100% right, never alter the C.G. from what the plans state until after the first test flights. It is possible to change the C.G. to your preference, but like Len says you will need the help of an experienced flyer to guide you in the right direction.

Sorry , but your method of doing a CofG check is incorrect. By moving the balance point back as you explained is just verifying that it is tail heavy.
Set the balance point as per instructions or plans at the point of balance and then add weight front or back and in this case in the front to have the aircraft balance properly.
For example if the instructions are to balance at 5.5 inches from the leading edge and the tail drops then add weight to the front as far forward as what works. I do not use stick on weights as they can come off as fuel residue from the engine can creep under the weight and come loose in flight . If using lead weight ; best to screw or bolt on. Always balance with an empty fuel tank when the tank is forward of the CofG . What can help is position the battery pack or anything else that is movable as far forward as you can.
As for wing fitting to the fuse ; it might be a good idea to get an experienced local flyer from your club to
take a look and supply some guidance.

Thanks Carl.
May reinstall the nose gear on a reinforced bulkhead, haven't decided. Tail dragger conversion is a winter project time permitting.

1. Where did you locate the main gear in the fore and aft direction?
2. Is the plywood thickness sufficient for mounting the main gear?
3. Did you cut channels for the wire gear to fit into or just mount on the surface?
4. What did you use for a tail wheel and how did you attach it to the rudder pushrod? Pictures of this would be great.

Thanks!!

Will report on the maiden(of the Skyward, not the dog) hopefully in the near future.

Well folks, the maiden on Saturday was fabulous! Thanks to all for your comments, suggestions and nose gears .

The NGH35 really starts and runs smoothly, did a bunch of taxi runs of increasing speed on the grass strip to check out the nose gear, steering and directional control, all went well. On takeoff, she lifted off nicely using half throttle and a touch of up elevator. She wanted to roll right so that required a lot of trim, but manageable in terms of a first flight. Cruised around for about 5 minutes, then time to land. Lots of float on approach so went long on the runway, one small bounce and then the final rollout, then crunch. The nose gear mount tore off the forward frame, my bad, long story but bottom line is my mounting of the gear to the structure was weak and couldn't withstand the load. Too bad, cuz everything else was perfect. Here's a picture before the flight last Saturday morning. I have video of the flight if anyone can tell me if it can be posted on RCC. Thanks again to those who have helped me with the build on this thread, lots of great experience gained in the process.

Re: Skyward 120

I ended up just cutting the plastic tube back to the fuse and adding a 4-40 threaded rod into it about 1/4 inch. Works perfect now.
