Re: Great Planes Fokker DR1 Restoration

Hey everyone!
I covered the ailerons today and what can I say, this covering is great! I tried to capture the fabric feel/look with my phone, but I don't know if it turned out that great. All I can say is that in person its A++++. However, this stuff doesn't stretch at all so tight curves and shapes might be a little hard. I had a hard time getting it to conform around the trailing edges of the aileron.
Anyway, hopefully I can shoot some paint onto these ailerons next weekend, just for "testing" purposes (aka I can't wait to see this thing painted)
As always,
Thanks for chiming in,
Ben

Re: Great Planes Fokker DR1 Restoration

Hi guys,
Sorry, I was in Toronto over the long weekend, way too many people for my taste. Luckly had some friends in Ajax, so I learned how to fly some helis. DEFINITELY NOT FOR ME! I prefer when an object can only go forward.... and not suddenly whip back
That said, no work got done on the fokker . As per what Sukhoi said, I will be doing pull-pull as I just ordered all the necessary cabling! I'll be making scale ply control arms and perhaps even look into scale hinges, but that's a stretch.
Anyone have any other scale ideas? I'll try and incorporate them!

On a side note, today my covering came at the local hobby shop! It is 21st Century Coverite . I got it in beige to simulate the real fabric. To tell you the truth, this stuff is cool. Its like a thin thin thin painted fabric sheet which acts and looks like normal covering material. However, on closer inspection, the fabric shows through. I plan on running over the surface with 800 grit sandpaper to just get rid of the slight sheen. It's not really shiny, nothing like monocote or ultracote, but it still has a little sheen to it from the paint. My aircraft will be a weathered beast of a machine, not some brand new shiny toy!!!

Anyway, thanks for chiming in,

Ben

Ps... new pictures soon!!

One of Mr. Scale, Dave Platts laws is "a scale model never gets finished, it is always a work in progress" or something like that. Ben, either way it's a heck of a lot better and more scale than when you started. Personally I think you should go all the way with your original plan of pull pull. You will be proud of your accomplishment.

Re: Great Planes Fokker DR1 Restoration

So today I re sanded/filled the elevator/fuse joint and fixed a few dings in the fuse. I ordered some fake leather for the cockpit trim and then reshaped the contour of the cockpit to be more scale. To end the day, I pondered about my pull-pull elevator/rudder setup. So I came up with the point, is it really worth it? Right now, I'm at 50/50 so I need you guys to push me over the edge! Tell me what you think!
