Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

It's amazing how long a cockpit can take with all the fiddly details- lots of compromises with scale too but here it is. It was hard to find good photos of the rear deck equipment so it's very much an approximation but I guess the main aim is to maker it believable.
The pilot is a JHH 1/10 figure (not sure if they're still in business) and the canopy frame was made with "lightweight foam clay" from Michaels. Weight gain over stock is 35 grams- not so bad but of course this jet doesn't need more weight in the nose.
Just a couple of rear view mirrors to add and I'll call it done and glue the canopy back on.

Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

Model looks great and awesome job on the cockpit Tom. Your work is up to Chris and Eric"s standards. I wish I had the skill and patience for doing that but unfortunately I don't so will focus my time on the exterior finish. What is the next project?

Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

More about the foam clay: I haven't made a canopy frame out of this stuff before but it went very well. Once you have the basic shape and bake it (275F for 15 min.) it sands nicely and remains flexible but surprisingly strong. The best part though is you can bend it and it'll retain the shape (as if it had wire inside) so in this case fitting it to the canopy was easy.
Weight-wise it's heavier than balsa but not by much and takes paint well too.
It's always fun to find a new material for this hobby of ours, and this stuff is great. Just search "Sculpey ultralite foam clay"- Michaels, Amazon, Walmart.

Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

Thanks Marty! Eric and Chris are a main source of inspiration for me. Not sure what's next but I should spend some time doing maintenance and repairs on the existing "fleet", I guess. Boring though..

Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

Where did you get the thin braided wires you used on the rear deck, they look really nice.

Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

John, I got the line years ago and don't remember from where. However, it's sold by Detail Master and a quick search just had lots of results.

Re: Freewing JAS-39 Gripen

Anyone know of threads (here or elsewhere) on the SAPAC Gripen? Got one almost finished in the basement from years gone by and am looking for suggested battery installation and towhook setup.
