BTE Reaction R54 balance point

So, I have the instructions here at home - they suggest the balance point is on the plans. My plans are at work and its a 1/2 hr drive round trip.

If someone can let me know where to balance that would be great. Or, Ill head to get the drawings tomorrow.

In my instructions when the kit was built 10+ years ago (I bought the plane in 2009 from Gaston B) he had marked the balance as between 6” and 7” back from the leading edge - is that at the fuselage?

Re: BTE Reaction R54 balance point

I went old school... drew the wing platform in CAD and used the geometric way to first calculate the MAC, then transferred the 29.5% back on that, then back to the wing root.

Gives the balance at 7” for 30% (rearmost recommended CG). So the target is between 6 1/2: to 7” at the root.

Re: BTE Reaction R54 balance point

On some forum Bruce said he sets his at 6 to 6.5 inches. That was just his preference but yes 6-7 inches back from the leading edge at the fuse side . I think I have mine at 6.5 but haven't had a chance to fly it yet.
And your old school is pretty darn close. Lol

Re: BTE Reaction R54 balance point

I’d lean towards the back end of that range:

1) these things are floaters on landing and a forward Cg will just make it sail on....

2) the airframe is very trainer like forgiving so a rear Cg will be manageable

3) use crow in the ailerons to help the flaps slow it down

YRMV.... just my personal experience....

Re: BTE Reaction R54 balance point

Mine was flying very well. No problem landing on our short field.

I’ll set the cg at between 6.5” and 7” back.

Re: BTE Reaction R54 balance point

The plane is pretty much right on the 7” mark without the Lipo battery up in the nose.

Ill set up my balancer and do it when my new battery comes in hopefully Tuesday.

Otherwise, the plane is all cleaned up, touched up, flight surfaces re-sealed and ready to rock, and/or roll!

Looks great for the age. I had so much hangar rash, it needed to be fixed up.

Re: BTE Reaction R54 balance point

New packs came today.

Balanced on the balancer around the 6.75” point so I’m good to go.

Hope to test fly the Wren80 soon!
