Nice looking install of the engine, I have a DLE20 in mine. Great flying plane, the only complaint is the angled bracket from the wing braces that have bust on me a few times

Re: G/P Waco Build

That engine should be equivalent of a 120-125 nitro, so believe the 160 should be more than adequate. I had a Saito 125 in the Pica Waco of the same specs and it flew with grace.

How did you find you covering? I mentioned earlier this one had the worst of any ARF I've ever seen. No amount of heating would keep it tight and after a flying season I expect to do a complete recover.

At the beginning of the flying season, I have to go over a few spots but not bad at all on my plane. I have added a couple of pictures with my new nose cone and you can see for a winter of sitting not many wrinkles.

Re: G/P Waco Build

Looking through your post I see you wanted a picture of switch location, in the front seat. In hindsight I had mine too far forward so with the wing on it is somewhat difficult to use the charging ports. I have been flying my plane for the last 4 years, flying off of grass and pavement. I know when I started to build mine everywhere I read people were talking about putting in a 30cc Gas engine. I have never had any power issues with my DLE 20, I have a 17x6 prop on the front and the engine runs well.
This has become one of my favorites and a couple people in various clubs always ask about it.

A real crowd-pleaser!

Re: G/P Waco Build

Was able to make a lot of progress yesterday. Installed and set up new Rx with failsafes and completed internal installations.

Similar to the Pica Waco I added the LiFE battery monitor. I use a standard display, with the negative lead on a momentary pushbutton to only activate when required. I omitted the flashing LED on this one, but can add that later if I want. Pics show layout of that and the ON/OFF switch in the front pit. Hopefully not too difficult to access as limited on where else it can go and not affect looks too much. One option would be perhaps to disassemble and paint to try and match exterior before moving it to a better location.

Also rigged up remote glow. I was hoping to use the legacy OS connections as they are extremely positive, but unless bent a bit one is in contact with the cowl.

On that note will leave the radial front for last as the intake tubes are a bit more proud than expected and will take a bit of planning and work to clear.

Next is to plug in both wings to confirm aileron deflections with the JR Matchbox have not changed, then onto final plastic pieces such as turtledeck, wing flares and windscreens. On the final stretch now.

Re: G/P Waco Build

Well, pulled it off the table and weighed in at 13lbs even with CofG pretty much bang on. Only things yet to install are the wing fillets, wheel pants and cowl so should not add much more and stay within the 13.75lbs max in the specs. The last two will likely stay off till a few flights under the wings.

Waiting for the bearings from Boca, In the meantime have other projects to get at.

Re: G/P Waco Build

As mentioned earlier, only thing still to add are the wing fairings and wheel pants. Fitted both, but those and the cowl will remain off till a few flights in.

Pilot is ready to go!

Re: G/P Waco Build

Looks great, Gary. I was lucky enough to score a NIB GP Super Stearman a couple of years ago. It's very pretty and a fine flyer. Very much like the WACO, I imagine.

Re: G/P Waco Build

The Super Stearman looked to have identical specs and I was actively looking for one when I found this.

What do you pull yours behind?

Re: G/P Waco Build

Pulled the engine and checked it over. Had to change the rear cam bearing as it was rough. The rest of the interior was more of a congealed lube covering than anything else so all back together and mounted. Charged the flight pack and intended to fire this up today, but "Honeydo" list took precedence. If weather holds will try tomorrow. Interested to hear how the Keleo exhaust sounds compared to the stock straight pipes and if the carb feed line with filter affects draw.
