Anyone had any experience with setting the cam position of the 170R3?

Re: Saito 170R3 Cam Timing

Cam timing any normal four stroke. Set the piston at top dead centre. Use a straw, toothpick or like item through the glow plug hole to make it exact. Set the cam so the crossover strokes meet. The exhaust is just closing and the intake is just opening. After you install the cam, rock the crank back and forth, check the straw is changing directions at the same time the valve are in the middle of switching over. To keep the cam from turning during instillation I made an aluminum "C" clip to hold the cam in place on the SAITO engines.

Re: Saito 170R3 Cam Timing

Most saito engines have a hole in one of the cam lobes but some use alignment marks . you can make a pin to drop in the lifter boss that lines up to the hole in the cam lobe for the ones that use this system . This will align the cam in the correct position when the piston is at TDC . Just find a piece of steel rod that fits the lifter boss and grind it to a point on one end , this will lock the cam in place so you can install the cam and remove the pin after it's completely installed .With the radial you also need to know the firing order to get it setup correctly . I believe saito is ,if you check one cylinder after the other at TDC fire/ overlap/ fire/ overlap/ fire/ overlap . So you would set one cylinder to TDC overlap, rotate 240 degrees and set the next one to TDC overlap then rotate another 240 degrees and set to TDC overlap , done ....
