Re: Aviation Photography 101
Thanks Dave! It's pretty neat how the right angle and background can alter the look of a model. This Skyraider is one of the FMS mini-wardbirds and has a wingspan of only about 27", but I think the photo makes it look like a much larger model.

Hi Larry, Thanks for the very detailed write up! Could you direct me as to where on the Canon would you go to adjust the Exposure Compensation you noted above. It's another function I would like to experiment with, to try to improve on the quality of my pictures. Also curious what type of telephoto lens you are using. I know it's certainly worth having one of the more commercial grade lenses, but is it also a matter of having a higher end camera along with it? Would it be wasted on one of the entry level DSLR's like the Rebel T3i that I have? Thanks again, Steve

Re: Aviation Photography 101
I've never used any of the Rebel series of cameras but they can do the job. This is from the T2i manual which I have on my laptop & I suspect it will apply to the T3i & T4i although the button may have moved.
Note the symbol for the button you need to press & hold while you turn the wheel & learn by use which direction brightens the photo & which darkens it. In daylight set something in front of a window & learn how to expose for it rather than the brighter scene outside. The same idea applies when shooting planes against the sky & on cloudy days it can take a fair amount of positive EC to get photos that aren't just a silhouette. As for lenses the most popular ones are indeed what are considered PRO grade lenses because they have faster AF systems (Canon L series in my case) and the most popular air show lens is the 100-400 L IS but another option is any of the 70-200 L's plus a 1.4 Tele Converter using just the center AF point. I also use the long ago discontinued Canon 35-350 L & the current replacement 28-300 L IS which is a great flight lens especially on a crop body. I've bought all of these used & they hold their value well compared to consumer grade lenses. That doesn't mean there aren't any good consumer grade lenses that can do the job but the cheaper ones (Canon markets several lenses in the 70 or 75 to 300 range) are less likely to do as well as the more expensive ones.

Re: Aviation Photography 101
Thanks Larry! I'll check that out tonight on my T3i and give it a try. It's those silhouette shoots that I am trying to avoid and learn how to adjust for them.
I've looked at the "L" series of Canon lenses and certainly would like to have one. It's tempting to jump right to using it, but I would imagine it would be best to learn all the functions of the camera itself, before investing in more lenses and such. Steve

Just had my first real workout with a L-series lens, the 100-400. WOW! What an improvement over the regular telephoto lenses I've used in the past. I still took plenty of crappy shots (equipment is no substitute for skill), but the good ones are much crisper & clearer than anything I've taken before. |

Re: Aviation Photography 101
The 100-400 is probably my most used lens & has been since getting it used about 7 or 8 years ago (used) & it's still selling for what I paid for it so unlike many things we buy ownership has been cheap. Make sure you use mode 2 of the IS for panning or turn it off. Here's a sample from Sat's EDF event which was the very first time I've been able to crank the shutter speed up & leave it there all day.
There's a learning curve to all of this but since you aren't spending money on film & processing it's just a matter of experimenting & practice. A smooth pan & an understanding of what to do when the LCD shows an over or underexposed shot solves a lot of things, whether R/C related, motorsports related or just when shooting a family event. Now a warning about long lenses on crop bodies. Don't waste too much time on really long shots. Although you can crop the image you'll notice it gets soft from atmospheric haze. I wouldn't have taken the next photo which is from a sequence but I knew the pilot was in trouble by the sound of the engine. I stayed locked on the plane & when it all went south I was ready but as you can see the photos loose something because of the distance (about .75 km)

Re: Aviation Photography 101
Just a couple of quick pics from last night. Tried adjusting the exposure compensation and got some better results, in that the bottom of the plane is not completely black and the top is not washed out from being too light.
I like how the hand launch pic captures the moment just after the plane is being released. And I've put out a couple of inquiries in regards to a 100-400 lens! Steve

Re: Aviation Photography 101
Just a bit of practice & in no time it starts to make sense. Well done. You're on the path to better photos.
